HIGH DEGREE OF SPECIALIZATION AT 50 LARGEST GERMAN FUEL CELL COMPANIES
High degree of specialization: It is also striking that 36 of the top 50 companies have specialized in one product area, while only four companies serve three or more product segments. This high degree of specialization is likely also due to the still-emerging technology and the associated increased development costs.
Key components: Almost one in four of the top 50 fuel cell suppliers develops and produces special valves, expansion tanks, or control flaps for fuel cell technology. Other frequently served product segments include complete vehicle assembly by OEMs in the passenger car and truck sectors, fuel cell and stack manufacturing, and tank and pipeline construction.
Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia are top fuel cell locations
The heart of Germany's fuel cell suppliers beats in three federal states: Three-quarters of the top 50 fuel cell suppliers are headquartered in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, or North Rhine-Westphalia. Baden-Württemberg alone accounts for more than a third of all top 50 headquarters locations. Besides Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Lower Saxony each have four headquarters of leading manufacturers of components for hydrogen cars and trucks.
Christian Scherer, analyst at MEYER INDUSTRY RESEARCH and co-author of the study, comments: “As is generally the case in the automotive sector, the three industrially strong German states dominate the locations of Germany’s 50 fuel cell suppliers. This is not surprising, since many of the players come from the ‘conventional’ automotive sector. But the industry’s young start-ups are also locating around the established automotive industry hotspots to be close to potential customers.”
